Studio Ghibli: Only Yesterday (1991)

Leffavuokraamossa sattui silmään Ghibli-elokuva, mitä en ollut aiemmin nähnyt, eli Only Yesterday vuodelta 1991. Se ei ole studion legendan Miyazakin vaan Isao Takahatan ohjaama. Elokuva sijoittuu 60-luvulle ja se kertoo 27-vuotiaasta Tokiossa työskentelevästä Taekosta, joka päättää lähteä maaseudulle lomalle sukulaistensa luo. Matkalla Taeko muistelee elämäänsä 10-vuotiaana koululaisena ja muistaa sekä mukavia että ikäviä asioita, jotka ovat tehneet hänestä sellaisen, kun hän tänä päivänä on. Hän ihastuu maalaispoikaan ja rupeaa pohtimaan, mitä hän elämältään haluaa.

I spotted the studio Ghibli movie Only Yesterday in the dvd rental store. I hadn't seen it before so I decided to rent it. It's directed by Isao Takahata and it tells the story of 27-year-old Taeko working in Tokyo in the 60s. She decides to go on a holiday in the countryside at her relatives' place and while travelling she remembers her childhood when she was 10 years old and all the sweet and bittersweet memories come back to her. On her holiday she has a crush on a peasant boy and starts to think about what she wants from life.

Minusta Only Yesterdayn juoni on hiukan ylimalkainen ja välillä punainen lanka tuntuu olevan hukassa, mutta toisaalta elokuvan ihana tunnelma hyvittää ne puutteet, mitä juonessa on. Taustat on piirretty niin kauniisti ja todenmukaisesti ja elokuvasta välittyy niin aito tunnelma, että sitä katsellessa voisi ihan kuvitella olevansa Japanin maaseudulla (ja oikeastaan tapahtumapaikkojen näkeminen saa aikaan matkakuumeen!) Taide on kaikinpuolin värimaailmoineen tarkkaan harkittu ja se on suorastaan silmiä hivelevää katseltavaa. Pidin siitä haikeasta tunnelmasta, joka elokuvassa vallitsee alusta loppuun saakka.

I think the plot was a little vague and at times it seems it was missing a direction, but on the other hand the atmosphere of the movie makes up to the weakness in the plot. The backgrounds are very beautifully and realistically drawn and while watching it's easy to imagine yourself in the Japanese countryside. All the colours and elements of the art are very carefully selected. I really enjoyed the wistful mood throughout the movie.

DVD:llä oleva "Making of Only Yesterday" dokumentti oli mielenkiintoinen ja sen katsominen sai vielä entisestään arvostamaan elokuvan taidetta, sillä kaikkihan on tehty käsin ja vasta dokumentin katsottua tajuaa, miten uskomattoman paljon aikaa ja vaivaa animaattorit ovat pistäneet tähän elokuvaan. Jotenkin arvostus näitä vanhoja helmiä kohtaan vain nousee kun tietää että nykypäivänä suurinosa animaatioista ja erikoisefekteistä tehdään tietokoneella.

The "Making of Only Yesterday" on the DVD was also interesting to watch and it made me appreciate the art even more, because everything is obviously hand drawn and only after watching the documentary you realize the tremendous amount of time and effort the animators have put into the movie. The old animation movies really stand out in my eyes now that everything is computer animated these days.

Only Yesterday sopii hyvin aikuiselle naisyleisölle ja suosittelen ehdottomasti niille jotka pitävät draamasta ja pitivät esimerkiksi Whisper of the Heartista :) Elokuvan herkkä ja haikea loppumusiikki, joka on muuten japaniksi käännetty alunperin englannista, kannattaa myös kuunnella.

Only Yesterday is great for the grown up female audience and I definitely recommend for those who like drama and who liked Ghibli's Whisper of the Heart. :) The gentle and wistful ending song, which is by the way translated to Japanese from English, is well worth listening to as well.
